Post ‘likes’ are gone.

Posted on December 4, 2021December 6, 2021 by chefswifediary

Migrating from WordPress.com to WordPress.org is more complicated than I thought. It costed me two weeks of writing downtime and even more, juggling with temporary and permanent domains, familiarising with new features and tools, and running back and forth with support teams to rebuilding the site. Disheartened with the absence of plugin option in basic plan on WordPress.com, signing up with WordPress.org seemed to be the right thing to do.

Googled and convinced by many on the ease of website migration, I wish I had more knowledge and experience in handling this this. Fret not, I learned as I move along and yes, today I am back on my writing track!

It was a long story – I spoke to nearly ten website engineers in the past two weeks mainly to overcome hurdles of data migration. Whilst WordPress.com data export didn’t consume much time, it doesn’t mean WordPress.org data import is straightforward. I literally uploaded the same data for over fifty times just to see a sign of completion. Received various advices from different engineers, mirroring the same widgets and features could have been easier if nameserver was swapped over from the start. Dreadful of losing my fellow subscribers due to different interfaces, Jetpack eventually came to rescue.

With countless tries and errors, my blog was rebuilt just the way I wanted. Although the overall outcome is satisfactory, I’ve lost all the precious ‘likes‘ accumulated throughout the years. Not only that, the ‘likes‘ which contributed to top posts leaderboard have disappeared altogether. The ‘likes‘ awarded by my readers, ie: your token of appreciation towards my posts in the past years are gone.

The website migration costed me dearly on this one. I’ve come thus far to reversing any actions. Whilst Frames of Life Blog will take time to regain momentum, having some confidence is better than none. If you are my current subscribers, please give me a nudge that you’re reading this. At least, I know I’ve not lost you.

Thanks Benjamin for the reassurance. It’s good to know that. I wasn’t sure if the post was published on readers, because I couldn’t find it.
