All we need is empathy.

Posted on July 7, 2022April 21, 2025 by chefswifediary

Here we are in the month of July. Best news of last month? We’ve won the battle against our ex-landlord and their management company too. Two big companies, Dorrington and Savills would rather go against working class family over a tenancy deposit held. Some would say it’s just business. I would say, it’s more of a money-making bully than business. For what reasons, check out my last post here. All we need is empathy.

Honestly, I don’t get it. I understand that life these days are not getting any easier with rising cost of living. However, my partner and I work hard and still pay our rent. Not forgetting that we also went through challenging furlough times but still went all out to pay our rent on time and in full. Having said that, it seems that all these are irrelevant to big companies. Social welfare and economic impacts on residents have nothing to do with them. Talking about sustainability, where do we start with real estate companies?

Contract takes precedent – be wary of what you sign up for especially it’s so easily overlooked with eagerness to move into a new place.

As individual, we can compromise, make-do, or be nice like a real human especially dealing with interventions and faults put on us, but to big companies, it’s just a business contract machine at the end of day. That was how I felt.

So, what’s the point of being nice? Likewise, is there a need to penalised good tenants without empathy? Truth to be told, we really thought we’d handover a perfect home. Didn’t I know I’d still be begging for mercy over petty faults. We’d be idiots to believe that they would have some mercy. Call it system, procedure, process, or whatever it is, all we need today is empathy. Not mercy for sparkly clean taps, walls without dust or crack-line free shower tray. We’ve done our very best and yet still feeling victimised at the end. I cannot imagine about others who could have got it worst! Thankfully, we went ahead with our claims and TDS supported us with fair judgement. We managed to get most of our money back, well almost a 100%!
